|WellPoint Again Recognized for Gender Diversity on Its Board of Directors; Ranked #2 by Corporate Women Directors International|
THOUSAND OAKS, Calif., Feb 25, 2004 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- WellPoint (NYSE:WLP), the nation's second largest health insurer, was ranked number two in a survey of FORTUNE 1000 California-based companies for gender diversity by the Corporate Women Directors International (CWDI).
The survey was announced yesterday at a CWDI conference in San Francisco.
"Our commitment to a strong and diverse workforce begins with our Board of Directors, 44 percent of whom are women," said Leonard D. Schaeffer, WellPoint's chairman and chief executive officer. "This also makes good business sense. Women make the majority of health care decisions in America, women have more direct experience with the health care system, and should be sufficiently represented at the Board level." Schaeffer added that, "Having significant representation of women on the Board is critical to good governance and exceptional performance."
In addition to having one of the most gender-diversified Boards of any FORTUNE 1000 company, WellPoint is consistently ranked as one of the leading companies for executive women. Earlier this year, WellPoint was named one of the top four companies for executive women by the National Association for Female Executives (NAFE). This is the fifth consecutive year WellPoint has been named a leading national company for executive women.
